7 months of use and the unit self-destructed. The feeder has a feature that you can't prepare for. The timer has a cycle of 3 settings between off, automatic and on, in that order. For it to work, if you change from any of the timing settings, you have to cycle to off before stopping on automatic. If you don't, it turns on but never turns back off. I was using the feeder to control my cat's weight. For a long time I fiddled with the settings fairly regularly. I made a small adjustment to the timer a week ago and I thought I cycled back to the automatic setting by turning it off first but I guess I didn't get it right. There is no way to check it. I went away for the day, the motor turned on and ran until it burned out. $150.00 down the drain and there is no way to fix it. Ergo Systems won't sell a replacement motor. I am so upset because what it did when it worked was perfect for me and my cat. But I'm sorry I wasted my money now. There are more expensive options available but if they work reliably they would be a better value than this product.

My first, very happy review below from October 2009, before the thing ground itself to pieces:
I did not find the setup or use of the feeder to be very easy. It took quite a while to get the container connected the right way. I really had a hard time working out the programming of the timer. I thought I was doing the right thing. You have to step through the 3 options, manual, auto, off; to set the timer and I thought I was doing it right but kept having the timer stay on. I stopped trying for a while and, after almost giving up, I tried to set it up one more time and it worked. It has been working correctly and just fine ever since.

What I wanted to say about the feeder is that the result of consistent feeding leaves me with a very content cat. My schedule changes all the time. Some days I leave home early and return late. Other days I leave in the middle of the afternoon. I would feed at different times of the day, changing almost every day. Those long periods of waiting left my cat famished. With the consistent feeding he seems calmer and he has stopped begging for food all the time.

I have been using the feeder for about 6 weeks now. It took me a while to work out a good sense of how much to feed. Sky is one year old this month and I'm just starting to change over to adult food. He is a big cat and I was concerned that he was putting on weight but that seems to be stabilizing now, too. He lost a front leg as a young, feral kitten and he can't afford to carry extra weight. That one leg takes all the shock every time he jumps down from something. Now he is losing the belly fat and he doesn't seem to be hungry all the time. I am very glad to have this feeder for this reason. It's easy to use once you work it out and for me the benefits of the results make me very happy to have bought the feeder. It does seem to be sturdy; that it will last a long time.
